Michael W. Hughey

Michael Hughey, a Craftsman and Artist in letterforms and the book arts has had a love affair with beautiful letters and beautiful books since childhood. Originally from Asheville, he lived for many years in NC but now resides in Northeast CT. His calligraphic works are published both nationally and internationally and collected in public and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum, NYC, and the Bahá’í World Centre, Haifa, Israel. He feels that even in an age of increasing technology, “…there is, indeed, an important place in human society for the warmth, beauty, and grace that calligraphy can bring to our lives.”

He exhibits note cards, limited-edition prints, and original calligraphy at the Ashford Farmer’s Market. He also teaches both calligraphy & handwriting privately.

Steve Gerling

Steve Gerling has been doing relief woodcarving since the mid-1970’s. He has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from UConn, with a major in sculpture. After school, he was drawn to the additional challenges of relief carving. Not only did an object have to be sculpted but it had to be skillfully distorted
in scale, perspective, and space to create an image convincing to the viewer.
Traditionally, most relief work was intended as decoration or embellishment to works of architecture or fine cabinetry. Steve chooses to make the carving the primary object. While much of the work were objects of fine woodworking, using them as a utilitarian frame, the main focus of attention has always been the carving.

Joe Burger

After retiring from a Mechanical Engineering career in 2009, I began my art journey with drawing and painting classes with a number of local instructors. I dabbled in pastel, oil, and colored pencil, but my preferred medium is watercolor, and my works are usually in the traditional realistic style. I belong to a number of art groups and am grateful for the many friends and acquaintances that art has brought my way. Sometimes I do commissions, everything from fighter jets to homesteads to puppy portraits and anything in between. Currently I teach watercolor at the Windsor Locks Senior Center.

Landscape oil painter Debra Gag has been a lifelong art enthusiast, painting since her early youth and finding inspiration from viewing the work of the French Impressionists early on.

A potter in the 70’s, a watercolorist in the 80’s and discovering oil painting in the 90’s, Deb has been making art for a long time! Debra enjoyed her long career (33 years!) teaching art for Vernon Public Schools, followed by 3 years teaching the art of painting at Arts Center East.

It was after retirement that she was able to really develop ” and find her voice” as a painter.

Inspired by the beauty of New England farms and forests and coastlines, Debra enjoys painting in her home studio in Ashford, Windowhaven Studio.

Debra exhibits in galleries throughout Connecticut and has patrons who are located in several states across the US.

Suzy Staubach is a potter and writer living in Ashford. Her most recent book, published by Timber Press, is A Garden Miscellany: An Illustrated Guide to the Elements of the Garden, available at all bookstores and from bookshop.org. Email Suzy to arrange for an autographed copy.

Suzy is inspired by the country pottery of ancient Korea, early America and 18th and 19th century England and France. Like potters through the centuries before her, she throws on a simple kick wheel and makes her own glazes from feldspars, clays and sand. She once-fires her pots in a tightly packed gas kiln which she built, leaving the lightest touch possible on the environment.

Suzy makes pots for the table and kitchen inspired by the pottery of ancient Korea, French and English country pottery, and early American pottery. She works in her quiet Ashford studio making platters, oven to table baking dishes, mugs, pitchers, serving pieces, bowls, dinner sets and more. Meant for use, her pots can withstand the rigors of cooking yet they look elegant on the table. Her primary tools are her kick wheel and her downdraft kiln. Her earthy glazes – deep red, willow green, oatmeal tan, white – are food safe and made from clays and feldspars in her studio.

Suzy’s pots – rolled rim mixing bowls, oval bakers, cookie jars, platters, serving dishes – are meant to be used and enjoyed. They are quiet pots that offer a bit of calm in these stressful times. They make food look its best.
